Born into a family of mathematicians and artists, my formative years were spent in Germany and England where I developed an early appreciation for art through accompanying my mother on visits to art museums.
In 2016, my love of fine art led me to take up painting. Though I began sporadically, I painted full time during the pandemic and have continued to do so. Owing to the vibrant pigments in oils and ease of blending, I choose to work with oils on canvas, though I sometimes use acrylics.
While I have no formal education in art, I find I rely a lot on my background in mathematics. In addition, I attribute my growing facility with color and technique to the vast repository of instructional videos available on YouTube. The most helpful by far is the critique from peers which I solicit whenever possible.
I love to paint South Florida’s seas and skies especially after a storm has just passed leaving remnants of spent storm clouds in the newly washed skies. I take photographs for reference but often paint from memory. My paintings are realistic because of all the details. For me, it’s all in the details.
I wish I could say I paint to highlight social, cultural, or political issues. Or that my work on canvas might advance an understanding of how art balances interpretation with reality. I am frankly unable to explain why I paint. All I can say is that I paint because it feels good, and I find it very satisfying. I am frankly unable to explain why I paint. All I can say is that I paint because it feels good, and I find it very satisfying. It is an expression of moments in time when everything in my heart, mind, and soul comes together and I am able to pour it all onto my canvas. I want my paintings to make the viewer feel nature’s energy and spirit the way I do.
I won first place with the Artists of Palm Beach County Exhibition titled “Falling into Winter” in February 2023. I also won the People’s Choice award for my entry in the Wellington Arts Society exhibition titled “Variations” in April 2023.
My inspirations come from many artists around the world and from periods ranging from the detailed seascapes of the 1600s to contemporary paintings of artists like Janhendrik Dolsma of the Netherlands, and Sandra Thompson of Florida. Sandra’s dramatic portraits of Palm Beach’s beautiful European architecture have created an indelible connection for me and South Florida. Janhendrik, a Dutch painter of clouds, captures a sense of time and place while exciting the the idea that something beyond exists. I am grateful to both for their encouragement to help me take my art more seriously.
