Cordelia Yancey

I am Cordelia Yancey wearable artist of Mama C’s Unique Chic. I create and embellish one of a kind pieces using Ankara and other fabrics. My adventure started when my then boyfriend asked me to marry him. I wanted to gift the women in my wedding with something special and I had a limited budget. I was browsing a retail site and saw a purse I believed I could recreate. After creating one or two my then fiance said “baby you’re an artist”. I didn’t believe him because I have such a high regard for artists and their work. And I doubted that I had the skills to call myself an artist. However three years later I have an abundance of inventory…purses, jackets, jeans, skirts, chokers etc. I’m a retired social worker so my days are filled with creating. I am a wearable artist and I also customize and enjoy commission requests. One of my first commission customers asked me to embellish a jean dress using Ankara fabric. She gave me liberty to create freely. I removed the buttons, added sleeves…she was so pleased she wore it during her visit to Africa. That was and still is a proud moment for me.
