Debra Somerville is a South Florida-based portrait and fine-art photographer whose work explores identity, individuality, resilience, and authentic human expression.
Originally from New York City, Somerville studied photography at the International Center of Photography in New York before establishing her professional photography practice in South Florida. Her work encompasses portraiture, editorial and commercial photography, cultural events, and personal fine-art projects.
Throughout her career, Somerville has been drawn to photographing people—not simply to document how they look, but to reveal something of who they are. Her portrait work is characterized by an emphasis on connection, authenticity, and the individuality of each subject.
Her ongoing fine-art series, Beauty Beyond Borders, brings these interests together through black-and-white portraits of women across generations, accompanied by the women’s own reflections on beauty, identity, aging, strength, and self-acceptance.
Through the project, Somerville challenges conventional definitions of beauty and invites viewers to consider the experiences and stories that exist beyond the surface of a portrait.
