Artist Statement:
I create sculptures and installations that are composed with the material language of clay, wood, and wool to form spaces that reflect the drama and comforts of everyday narratives of uncertainty. Mass and line play in casual balance, forming moments of tension and overlap that derive from stories as simple as understanding a new place and as difficult as reconciling ideologies.
Using the language of abstraction allows me creative freedom, as I waver between working from and working to. One decision affords the next, and the not-quite-functional meets the almost-accidental to form a series of quiet gestures. The work stems from personal narratives, but I intentionally make decisions that are intuitive and experimental, leading to compositions that are rhythmic and playfully awkward. The feeling of moving through is more important than arriving, and process is here given the pedestal. In the words of Wallace Stevens – So it is to sit and balance things / to and to and to the point of still.
