Sarah Davis Rojo was born and raised in South Florida. Her recent series of oil paintings manifests the artist’s interest in ideal environments. Since childhood, Davis has found her visual language and inspiration from her great-grandfather, the 20th-century Florida landscape artist Hal Mordaunt, and the work of her grandfather, James Davis Sr., a master woodturner, with whom she currently shares a studio space.
Davis attended the University of Florida and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors in Painting. During her studies at Florida, she completed an immersive art program in Florence, Italy, and has since completed continuing studies at the New York Academy of Art. She has shown her work in exhibitions throughout Palm Beach County and won numerous awards. Most recently, she taught art and art history at The Benjamin High School for eight years.
Davis finds inspiration from the landscape she’s experienced to create convincing illusions of atmospheric environments. The figure within this landscape exists in symbiosis with the natural surroundings, which function as a metaphor for the hope and resiliency that she has found in its cycles. Often, the solitary figure is inspired by the many retreats of solitude she has completed to find perseverance and strength despite challenging circumstances. Brightly colored flamingos transform into women, completely free in the illusion of their ideal environment.
