Celebrate Hispanic culture by visiting the Norton Museum of Art during its annual Nuestra Cultura Community Day.
The Norton’s commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Nuestra Cultura Community Day, is set for 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, October 3, includes Latin music, dance, art activities, and more. There will be free admission and free parking. Online registration is requested.
Last year, more than 1,000 guests came to the Norton to celebrate the diverse cultures and traditions across South America, Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
Entertainment gets underway at 11 a.m. with music by Plena Es, a high-energy Latin dance band from South Florida. The group specializes in the Puerto Rican percussion-based styles of bomba and plena. Bomba comes from enslaved Africans in Puerto Rico who used the drums to communicate with each other safely and privately through specific rhythmic patterns.
At noon, a film, They Dream, directed by William D. Caballero, shares the story of the director and his mother surviving devastating losses by crafting animations that bring their loved ones back to life, discovering that every act of creation is also an act of letting go. Through a one-of-a-kind blend of miniature artistry, handcrafted figurines, digital rotoscoping, and full 3D motion capture, Caballero and his mother literally transform themselves into their ancestors—reanimating family stories with honesty, complexity, and profound love.
Also at noon, the popular DJ Rumble sets feet to dancing, taking cues from the energy in the room rather than a fixed setlist.
There will be story times in English and Spanish at 12:15 p.m., 1:45 p.m., and 3:15 p.m. for children and their grown-ups.
At 12:30 p.m., Join dance instructor Jan Clancy, who teaches the basics of bachata, merengue, and salsa — no partner or experience required.
At 1:30 and 3:45 p.m., head to the Pamela and Robert B. Goergen Garden for a pull-string piñata party — no sticks, just ribbons, surprises, and plenty of candy fun.
David Lucca y Los Clásicos takes to the stage at 2 p.m. with 1970s big band salsa style for dancing. Lucca has been in the music business for more than 45 years and was nominated for two Latin Grammy Awards and has performed with Tito Puente and Dave Valentin.
At 3 p.m., Mariachi Pancho Villa brings the rich traditions of Mexican music to life, with corrido, cumbia, and other musical favorites.
Throughout the day, guests can visit with community partners and learn how Hispanic, Latino, and Indigenous organizations in Palm Beach County are making a positive impact in local communities.
Learn to play dominoes with The Puerto Rican Cultural Society of Palm Beach County and discover why this centuries-old game is a beloved pastime throughout the Caribbean and Latin America.
And be sure to join the Norton’s Museum Educators for fun, creative art projects.
