Christin Paige Minnotte is an artist working in photography and video, light-responsive materials, installation and experiential design. Light is the predominant formal and conceptual element in her interdisciplinary practice, utilized as reflection, projection, translucency and atmospheric or experiential design. Her work is centered around mankind’s relationship to nature. She has a BA from Bard College (2001) and a BFA (2010) from the San Francisco Art Institute.
She is currently developing PERLUMINA, her patented light-responsive design surface for public projects and architecture as experiential, perceptual design. Created by reflection and designed for reflection, Perlumina’s light-responsive surfaces are a new way to use light, beauty and nature as surface system and material, as light-art installation and ethical architecture.
Her most recent purely photographic series is UNBREAKING SYMMETRY. Symmetry breaking in nature creates the infinite individual forms we see in the landscape. Unbreaking Symmetry “unbreaks” these forms using reflectional symmetry as a formal tool to reveal the hidden, fundamental mathematical order - the formulas for perfect circles, squares, triangles - ever-present as beautiful, fundamental principle within the complexity and seeming disorder of the tropical landscape.
Organization Type: Visual Arts
Perlumina’s light responsive surfaces can be paired with projection to create sophisticated, perspective-shifting 3-dimensional play on 2-dimensional surfaces to create luminous experiential design features. Shown here: “A study in beauty as altered dimensionality, form, light, mushroom, lichen and trees.” Scrub to 1m20s for conceptual mockup in AI-generated contemporary wellness space. Perlumina is an adaptable system of light-sensitive display combining the physics of light with art to create a dynamic, experiential process for enhancing and elevating perception. As video works, Perlumina articulates studies in light, beauty and the expansion and freeing of dimensionality in perception. Combining scale-invariant imagery and similar forms throughout the spectra of scale as moving light, these works show the natural world in a way which reveal characteristics that underly the fundamental order and reciprocal purpose woven throughout individualities in the natural world. By also transposing the expected perception of dimensionality into a sort of extra-dimensionality, these works seek to transpose the expected into the unexpected, and to make wonder and beauty the starting point for thought and reasoning. Installed on floors or ground, the shifting perception of dimensionality is particularly beautiful, as the expectation of solidity and surface is perceptually dematerialized. The result is a freeing of thought from fixed physical boundaries and a more expansive sense of beauty and form. All Perlumina surfaces and installation works are designed according to the premise that the material and immaterial glow one sees and feels in nature is a reflection of the fact that light is continuously reflected : both literally by and through forms in nature, and figuratively, in the radiant grandeur of its intelligent ordering, its principle.
